Tools you'll need

See the full tools list for where to buy each one and budget alternatives.

This schedule is based primarily on the Porsche Maintenance and General Repairs Manual, with some additional — and in places more stringent — recommendations from Clark’s Garage noted along the way.

If you only read one thing, read the quick reference below. The detailed checklists further down are what a shop works through at each interval.

Quick reference

The intervals worth memorizing for a 944 or 968:

ServiceInterval
Engine oil & filterEvery 3,000–5,000 mi (4,800–8,000 km) — see note below
Spark plugsEvery 30,000 mi or 2 years
Air filterEvery 30,000 mi (48,000 km)
Timing & balance shaft belts944: 45,000 mi · 968: 60,000 mi — inspect tension/condition every 15,000 mi or yearly
Water pumpEvery other belt change — 944: ~90,000 mi · 968: ~120,000 mi
Accessory drive belts (power-steering V-belt, A/C–alternator poly-rib)Inspect every 30,000 mi
Brake fluidEvery 2 years (yearly if tracked)
Engine coolantEvery 2 years
Manual transmission oilEvery 60,000 mi (96,000 km)
Automatic transmissionFluid + strainer every 30,000 mi; differential oil every 60,000 mi
Full inspection serviceEvery 15,000 mi (24,000 km)
Wheel alignmentNew car at 1,800–3,000 mi, then as needed

On oil changes. Porsche specifies 7,500 mi for Turbos and 15,000 mi for normally-aspirated cars. Those intervals are long. Shorter changes protect the bearings, rings and valvetrain — Clark changes oil every 3,000 mi (4,800 km) and recommends an interval no longer than 5,000 mi (8,000 km). Use only a Mahle filter with check valve or a Porsche OEM filter.

First service — new or freshly rebuilt engine

At 500–2,000 mi (800–3,200 km). This is Porsche’s break-in service. Most of our cars aren’t new, so it usually only applies after an engine rebuild.

  • Change engine oil and filter (break-in)
  • Engine & cooling: inspect engine for leaks; check cooling/heating system for leaks; check coolant hose condition and tighten connections; inspect radiator for external fouling; check coolant level and antifreeze strength; check crankcase ventilation and intake hoses for tight connections
  • Brakes: check brake pedal play (adjust if needed); inspect hoses and lines for leaks, damage and corrosion; check fluid level and top off
  • Drivetrain: check clutch play (adjust if needed); inspect manual transmission for leaks and check oil level; check automatic transmission fluid level
  • Exhaust: inspect for leaks/damage and check fasteners for tightness
  • Tires: check condition and pressure
  • Road test: confirm operation of brakes, parking brake, brake booster, clutch, cruise control, steering, heating, A/C, instruments and (automatics) kickdown; re-check engine for leaks

Two related new-car items:

  • After any timing belt replacement: re-check tension and condition of the timing (and balance shaft) belts at 500–2,000 mi.
  • New vehicles: wheel alignment service at 1,800–3,000 mi (3,000–5,000 km).

Every 7,500 mi / 12,000 km — Turbo only

  • Change engine oil and filter (Turbo engines).

(See the oil-change note above — a shorter interval is recommended regardless of engine.)

Every 15,000 mi / 24,000 km — full inspection service

The big one. Change the oil and filter, then work through the full inspection below, grouped by system.

Engine & cooling

  • Engine: inspect for leaks
  • Cooling and heating system: check for leaks
  • Coolant hoses: check condition, tighten connections
  • Radiator: inspect for external fouling
  • Coolant: check level and antifreeze strength
  • Crankcase ventilation: check hose connections for tightness
  • Intake air: check hoses, lines and connections for tightness
  • Exhaust system: inspect for leaks/damage; check fasteners for tightness

Brakes

  • Brake pedal: check play, adjust if needed
  • Brake hoses and lines: inspect for leaks, damage and corrosion
  • Brake fluid: check level, top off
  • Brake system: inspect pads and discs for wear

Clutch & drivetrain

  • Clutch: check play, adjust if needed
  • Clutch plate: check for wear
  • Hydraulic clutch actuator: inspect for leaks
  • Lubricate the clutch release lever and secondary spring
  • Manual transmission: inspect for leaks, check oil level, top off

Time- and condition-based items

Some of the most important jobs are driven by age or wear rather than odometer reading.

Fluids (by time)

  • Brake fluid and engine coolant: replace every two years regardless of mileage.
  • Tracked cars: change brake fluid at least once a year. Note that some PCA regions require proof of a brake-fluid change within 3 months of a DE event to pass tech inspection.

Timing & balance shaft belts

  • Replace at 45,000 mi (944) / 60,000 mi (968).
  • Inspect tension and condition every 15,000 mi — this assumes regular driving. If the belt is two years old and you haven’t reached the 15,000 mi mark, check tension and condition then, and once a year thereafter.

Water pump

  • 944 water pumps rarely last much past 100,000 mi. Replace at every other belt change (~90,000 mi).
  • 968 pumps may reach the second belt change (~120,000 mi), but monitor closely for signs of failure after 100,000 mi.

Belt tensioners & rollers

  • At each belt change, remove the rollers and spin them by hand — replace any that are noisy.
  • Replace all rollers at every other belt change (unless an individual roller was replaced at the previous change).
  • Pre-1987 944s: replace the timing belt tension roller stud at every other belt change.
